In the 1980s, Bed and Breakfasts were arguably the most popular form of accommodation among visitors to Ireland. Staying in a family home meant you got more of the authentic Irish experience, including the renowned Irish hospitality, usually at a more affordable price.
In the ’90s and ’00s however, hotel prices came down (as more of them were built) and B&B prices rose (as family living costs went up), so competition in the sector has become fierce and many have found it difficult to survive.
While the inevitable culling of B&Bs has had the benefit of removing some of the poorer lodgings, standards in this accommodation sector still vary hugely. Again, look for reviews on Tripadvisor where available.
