Free Derry Corner
Free Derry Corner is an icon representing the Republican Resistance, and marking the eastern border of the Bogside area.
- The words You are Now Entering Free Derry were crudely painted on the side of a dwelling in 1969 by a local activist.
- When a British Home Secretary Jim Callaghan came to visit the city later that year, locals whitewashed the wall and had the words professionally painted — to ensure the British Government’s representative would get the nationalist’s message.
- The house was destroyed in 1972, but the gable wall was retained, and now stands a monument.
Free Derry Corner is also close to the site of The People’s Gallery, a group of political and historical wall murals created by three local artists.
